In the Sekotong district of West Lombok, Indonesia, illegal small-scale gold mining has led to severe mercury contamination, causing significant health crises, particularly among children. Despite a national ban on mercury use since 2014, miners continue to use the toxic substance to extract gold, releasing harmful vapours and waste into the environment. This persistent contamination has resulted in birth defects, neurological disorders, and other health issues. The situation is further exacerbated by Child Labour, with children as young as eight involved in mining activities without protective equipment becoming exposed to mercury on a regular basis.
